SHEAR MAGIC - his top 10

Alan Shearer netted his 200th goal for Newcastle and here, the Press Association's Damian Spellman looks at 10 of the best.

1 Newcastle v Everton, St James' Park, December 1, 2002

With his side trailing 1-0 to Kevin Campbell's first-half strike and with only minutes remaining, Shearer latches on to Shola Ameobi's knockdown to blast an unstoppable volley over the astonished Richard Wright and pave the way for Craig Bellamy to claim all three points with an even later winner.

2 Newcastle v Chelsea, St James' Park, April 25, 2004

Having seen Ameobi cancel out Joe Cole's fifth-minute opener before the break, Shearer accepts Olivier Bernard's 48th-minute ball down the left, turns away from Marcel Desailly and hammers a superb long-range effort across keeper Marco Ambrosio and into the bottom corner to win it.

3 Newcastle v Aston Villa, St James' Park, November 3, 2001

Villa arrived at St James' sitting proudly at the top of the Premiership table, but left having being taught a lesson, Shearer helping to secure a comfortable 3-0 win with a stunning side-footed volley past Peter Schmeichel from a Rob Lee cross.

4 Newcastle v Tottenham, FA Cup semi-final, Old Trafford, April 11, 1999

In a tight semi-final, having put his side 1-0 ahead in extra-time from the penalty spot, Shearer receives the ball from Silvio Maric 20 yards out and sends it screaming high to Ian Walker's left to book his side's trip to Wembley.

5 Newcastle v Leicester, St James' Park, February 2, 1997

With his side trailing 3-1 at home to the Foxes, Shearer plunders a remarkable hat-trick - his first for the club - inside 14 minutes, the pick of them a vicious free-kick which might have caused serious injury to goalkeeper Kasey Keller had he been able to move quickly enough to get in the way.

6 Newcastle v Wimbledon, St James' Park, August 21, 1996

Special because it is his first win a black and white shirt, Shearer strikes two minutes from time with a delicious curling free-kick to seal a 2-0 win.

7 Manchester United v Newcastle, Old Trafford, November 23, 2002

In a remarkable encounter, Shearer fires home a rocket free-kick to make it 2-2 after Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy have struck either side of Bernard's equaliser. However Dutchman Van Nistelrooy goes on to complete a 15-minute hat-trick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims a fifth to spoil Shearer's day and make Bellamy's late intervention immaterial.

8 Newcastle v Bolton, St James' Park, February 2, 2002

Having already cancelled out Ricardo Gardner's 19th-minute opener, Shearer equalises for the second time with a ferocious flying header from an Aaron Hughes cross which gives Jussi Jaaskelainen no chance.

9 Newcastle v Charlton, St James' Park, April 20, 2002

Shearer runs on to Gary Speed's through-ball and blasts home the 200th Premiership goal of his career with an unstoppable long-range effort which arrows past goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

10 Newcastle v Sporting Lisbon, St James' Park, April 7, 2005

A classic Shearer goal earns a 1-0 win for Newcastle in the first leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final against the Lisbon giants. Laurent Robert's free-kick from the left of the box is met by Shearer's thumping header past Ricardo. A dismal performance by Newcastle in the second leg, however, ends their interest in the competition.
