Alan's Shear Class By Jeremy Armstrong SOCCER star Alan Shearer is giving the £1million proceeds of his testimonial match to charity. The Geordie legend has pledged cash from his final game for Newcastle United to kids and cancer funds. The Mirror first revealed Shearer's plans last January - and the great man confirmed it. The game against Celtic on May 11 is a guaranteed sell-out with Newcastle fans desperate to say farewell to their highest scorer. The ex-England captain has also confirmed he plans to leave a legacy at United's Academy by launching the Alan Shearer Scholarship to fund young talent. Shearer, 35, said: "I hope that by pledging the money from my testimonial game to worthy causes that people less fortunate than myself will benefit in some way from my football career." The Premiership's record scorer is following in the footsteps of Sunderland's Niall Quinn, whose testimonial made £1.5million for charity. Shearer, who received an OBE in 2001, added: "I've lived my boyhood dream, played in front of the most loyal fans in the world, captained my country, played for the home team I supported as a boy and broken the goal-scoring record of an absolute Tyneside legend. "Now I have my final opportunity to say farewell to the fans." The money will go the NSPCC, Bobby Moore cancer fund and Nordoff-Robbins charity for people with physical and mental illness. Dennis Clark, of the NSPCC, said: "We're extremely grateful." Fans' groups paid tribute to father-of-three Shearer last night. Mark Jensen, The Mag editor, said: "It shows what a great guy he is. He's a hero on and off the pitch."
